09-01-2023 | Installation Visualisation
My project - working title: 'My family's not a tree, it's a forest' - culminates in an installation of the collection of work made, in order to exhibit my ideas on an archive’s ecology. Work will include ceramics, textiles, sound and video work, but it will also incorporate pieces from my family archive, namely found photographs, as well as textiles made by my grandmother. I hope to indicate with these additional elements, the ideas of the new work being made in response to the archive. I plan to experiment with display methods throughout the year, in order to hone these skills towards the final degree show. I will seek feedback from my tutors and peers on these experiments in order to develop and improve the layout of the work. This feedback takes place in the studio, as well as tutorials and crits, but I have also gained general installation experience through the BA Fine Art and Painting Winter Exhibition which took place on 15th-16th December, in which I showed a sound work alongside lettering. Ultimately I would like the final degree show installation to be shown in one of the seminar rooms on the ground floor of the annex at Calcutta House, or the smaller storage rooms opposite the staff offices on the second and third floors of the annex. Given the use of sound, I believe a separate space would be ideal in order to not encroach on other students’ work, and to create the right atmosphere for viewers/listeners of the work.

Layout 1 - Projector plays video work, speakers play sound work. In the centre of the room, in front of the projector, a short, wide plinth/platform displays the constellation of clay family members joined with textiles. The grouping will be placed on a bed of branches and twigs.
Layout 2 - Projector and speakers as before. A reclaimed dining table sits centrally, dressed with a tablecloth borrowed from my family archive. Atop is the constellation of clay family members joined with textiles.
Layout 3 - Projector and speakers as before. Salvaged construction netting (orange) is hung from the ceiling in cylindrical or tree-like forms in organic clusters. The constellation of clay family members joined with textiles is placed either on the floor, or on a short, wide plinth/platform. Will trial on bed of branches as before.
