24-04-2023 | Degree Show Installation Plans

I would like to use one of the seminar rooms on the ground floor of the annex (preferably CAG-06). This is because I believe the lighting conditions to be most favourable to show my installation i.e. low light, with some natural light coming from frosted windows. These conditions are aligned to the tent interior setting I am trying to convey. I also feel, given the sound element of my installation, I would prefer to be in a closed off space, so audience members can listen to the work in a quiet environment. I’m attempting to capture the intimacy of a “fireside storytelling” experience in reference to mythographers Martin Shaw and Marina Warner, which I feel will be more impactful in a closed room setting.

I would also like to use the shelving/alcove in the corridor outside the seminar room (preferably CAG-06) to show my baskets and clay pieces. I believe these will work better in a separate display, but one which is close to or leading towards the larger installation. Using the alcove shelving would signpost the rest of the work to be seen inside the room (CAG-06). I also believe the lighting conditions in the corridor to be more appropriate, i.e. brighter natural light.

I intend to show an installation piece, this will include the following:

  • 7 x palm leaf baskets (maximum height: 16.5cm, maximum width 15.5cm, all very lightweight) to be displayed on stained wood hanging fixtures (maximum height: 15cm, maximum width: 15cm) which should attach to the wall with screws (I will make good the walls with suitable filler and paint after we strike the exhibition)

  • 7 x clay sculptures (maximum height: 17cm, maximum width 12cm)

  • Approx. 50 pieces of driftwood/salvaged branches (maximum length: 50cm)

  • Approx. 20m of orange netting, overlaid with air dry clay and palm leaves to hang in a tent-like structure from ceiling and walls

  • Netting draped from ceiling to potentially house objects from the archive, eg. photographs, documents, souvenirs (I appreciate this will need to be load tested for Health and Safety)

  • Sound installation, approx. 10mins duration (no sensitive material) to be played from one speaker installed 70cm above floor level to mimic the height of a seated fireside storyteller

  • Moving image, approx. 10mins duration (no sensitive material) to be shown on approx. 14inch screen (vintage TV available at uni)

How I intent to show the work:

  • Existing shelf system to right of CAG-06 (ground floor of annexe)

  • Baskets attached to wall via fittings and screws

  • Clay pieces shown at base of alcove

  • Furthest half of CAG-06

  • Netting inset with clay/palm leaves to hang from existing fittings, to drape from ceiling and walls in tent-like structure

  • Archival objects (photographs, documents, souvenirs) to be held by ceiling netting

  • Speaker playing sound work to be raised 70cm from floor, on suitable stand

  • Screen playing moving image to be placed on floor

Measurements to consider:

Existing shelf system to right of CAG-06 (ground floor of annexe) -

  • H: 119.5cm, W: 425cm, D: 47.5cm

  • Floor space: 2m2

  • Wall space: 5m2

Furthest half of CAG-06 -

  • H: 270cm, W: 460cm, D: 340cm

  • Volume of space: 42m3

Potential health and safety risks:

  • Potential trip hazard from sound/video equipment wires

  • Potential overhead hazard from items being held by the netting draped from ceiling

Equipment required:

  • Speaker and potentially a stand

  • Vintage TV

  • Necessary connection cables

  • Potentially spot lights
